'I wouldn't let go of the car door': Larger-than-life Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson reveals she suffered crippling …


She hit the big time with her with larger-than-life personality in the string of highly successful Pitch Perfect films. 

But despite being now known for her stage presence, actress Rebel Wilson has spoken about how she struggled with crippling shyness as a kid. 

Speaking on The Producers Guide podcast, Rebel recalled her first foray into a Sydney drama class and how she had to be dragged out of car crying by her mum.

‘I was like the really shy academic child – who was very very shy,’ the Hollywood actress, who also has a law degree, spilled. 

‘At one point my mum got so sick of it because I think she wanted me to be popular and have friends and stuff.’

It was then the star of How To Be Single said her ‘strong mother’ decided to take her to drama class in the suburbs of Sydney – around the age of eight.

Describing the experience as traumatic, Rebel said she ‘held onto the car door and would not go’ and started to cry during her first time there.  

‘I would not go. She physically dragged me in there. It was so embarrassing I was saying, I don’t want to go, I don’t want to go.’ 

She continued: ‘For some weird reason I get in there and there’s other kids in there, so I put on an American accent, because I was so shy, I couldn’t possibly interact with these people.’

The Pitch Perfect star, who got her start on the Australian comedy show Fat Pizza, said after a while she started to enjoy it, which led to her developing herself through the creative arts. 

‘The first time it was traumatic and then I started to enjoy it. Then I slowly used creative arts to develop my personality – I could do it through characters and not myself.’

In the wide-ranging interview, Rebel spoke about her rise from suburban Sydney to Los Angeles – and her first hit show in Sydney fringe theatre.  

Rebel, added that she played a role in a high school production of Grease, before moving on to produce her own work in her early 20s.

The actress moved to Los Angeles in 2010, before securing her breakout role in the comedy Bridesmaids, for which she was reportedly paid just $3000.
